Boserup Forest: Shelters, Fire Pits and Walking Routes

We are well on our way to mapping all the best walking routes in Denmark. We were on a trip in Boserup Forest last winter, and we could not leave you without a blog post about it.

We were genuinely enthusiastic about Boserup Forest, which offered lovely trails with shelters, fire pits and plenty of scope to cook in the open air. The first thing we always look for when finding a new walking route is some good maps, so we do not walk in vain. An app we have started testing a lot is AllTrails, and here we found no fewer than two walking routes across Boserup Forest.

You do not need a GPS or to check out routes before you head into the forest, though. There are marked routes you can follow if you like. We love going off road, though, and are therefore always glad to have a GPS with us so we can more easily find our way back onto the track. Especially last winter, when it was extremely cold and you could actually skate out on Roskilde Fjord.

What we did not know before we set off

Boserup Forest is one of the country’s 20 most visited forests. So even though there is good parking, there were also plenty of people despite the very cold weather. We therefore reckon it can get overcrowded at certain times. There are also mountain bike routes, nature playgrounds and other interesting sights. We are especially wild about the shelter options out by the water.

You can find several great shelters in Boserup Forest. Among them are three shelters out towards Roskilde Fjord, where you get right up close to Lerskrænten. Some of them can be booked, but there is also a shelter on the western shore of Kattinge Vig that you can use freely.

Are you thinking about booking one of the other shelters instead? Then it has to be done through the Danish Nature Agency’s booking system. The forest belongs to the Nature Agency, and since many people want to try the wonderful experience of sleeping in a shelter, a booking system can be an advantage. Other recommendations for shelter trips

Since it was extremely cold the last time we were out, we did not take particularly many photos, but they were some lovely shelters we saw. Fire pits and more info about Boserup Forest

We do not always remember to bring enough gear to make a fire on our hikes, but luckily we had the fire specialist Bjarke with us on this trip.

You will find fire pits at Kattinge Vig. They were some really fine fire pits, but we chose to make a fire in a fire hut, which in some cases can be really smart. It turned into a half-bad experience, though, because the hut was not built optimally, and there was far too much smoke inside. Remember that making a fire outside the designated places is not permitted.

Besides the fire hut, you will find barbecue spots with tables and benches available. So if you are thinking about staying overnight in one of the forest’s shelters, you can also cook your own food. If you need the toilet or water, you can sort out both. You just have to find Boserup Nature Centre, and then you have everything the heart desires.

Why you should take a trip to Boserup Forest

We were very surprised by how lovely Boserup Forest was. That is why we recommend it, because you can do so many different activities. The forest is especially known for its many flowering anemones in spring, but it also holds a good deal of well-preserved history. The forest is said to have been inhabited since the Stone Age, and you can find, among other things, burial mounds dated back to the Bronze Age.

From the cliff you have a fine view out over Roskilde Fjord. One of the most visited areas is the clay pit, which you will almost certainly come across too if you head out to sleep in a shelter or make a fire. We give the forest 4 out of 5 stars. We usually rate the walking route itself, but in this case we give a rating to the whole forest. The only thing keeping us from top marks is that there are probably too many people at the good times. It is, however, thoroughly recommendable to take a trip to Boserup Forest.

How to find your way to Boserup Forest

If you need to find your way out to Boserup Forest, there is, as mentioned, good parking, which is also down to the heavy traffic. There are no fewer than three car parks along the forest edge on Boserupvej and one at Slusehuset.
